Professor Jaap Verweij (Rotterdam Cancer Institute, The Netherlands) will become Clinical Oncology Editor and Dr Maurizio D'Incalci (Institute of Pharmacological Research 'Mario Negri', Milan, Italy) the Editor of Experimental Oncology of the EJC taking over from Professor Ian Hart, who will step down from this position at the end of 2000. They will join Professor John Smyth (University of Edinburgh, UK), who was recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of the journal, from the beginning of 2001. Professor Smyth commented that he is delighted that these two distinguished oncologists have agreed to join him on the Editorial Board. "We have known each other for many years and share a real enthusiasm for expanding collaboration in European cancer research. The European Journal of Cancer can play a dynamic role in this and we look forward to working with the other members of the editorial team to achieve this aim" he said. Professor Verweij has been Professor of Experimental Chemotherapy and Pharmacology in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Rotterdam Cancer Institute (Daniel den Hoed Cancer Center) and the University Hospital of Rotterdam since 1998, and consultant medical oncologist at the Comprehensive Cancer Center in Rotterdam since 1985. His main interests are new drug development, including the performance of clinical phase I and early phase II trials, and the inclusion of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in these studies. He also has a major interest in the design aspects of early clinical trials. Professor Verweij was recently elected as Vice President of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), having been closely involved with the organisation for more than 15 years. He is a past Chairman of the EORTC Early Clinical Studies Group (1993-1996), the EORTC Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcoma Group (1996-1999) and the EORTC New Treatment Committee (1997-2000). He has also been a member of the EJC Editorial Board for the past 5 years. Commenting on his appointment, Professor Verweij said "My aim is to further strengthen the position of the EJC as a well-read scientific journal, to strengthen its formal links with the EORTC, and to increase the liveliness of the news section. I am delighted to be working with Professor Smyth and Dr D'Incalci, both of whom I have known for many years and with whom I share the same view on the future of the EJC." Dr Maurizio D'Incalci is the Chief of the Department of Oncology at the Institute of Pharmacology Research (Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche 'Mario Negri') in Milan, Italy, and has held this post since 1996. Dr D'Incalci has held a number of positions, including various posts within the Institute in Milan, Visiting Fellow at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London (1975) and Visiting Associate at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda (1983-1984). He was Chairman of Pharmacology and Molecular Mechanisms (PAMM) of the EORTC from 1990 to 1993 and Chairman of the New Drug Development and Coordinating Committee of the EORTC from 1994 to 1996. Dr D'Incalci was also Chairman of the Research Division of the EORTC from 1997 to March 2000 and became a Member of the EORTC Board from April 2000. In 1986, Dr D'Incalci was the recipient of the European School of Oncology Award for Cancer Chemotherapy, and has authored more than 300 papers and several book chapters on Cancer Chemotherapy. Dr D'Incalci said "The fast rate of progress made in cancer research in the last few years will accelerate in coming years. I hope that I can attract contributions from the best scientists working in the field of experimental oncology, so that I can build on the excellent work done by my predecessor, Professor Ian Hart". Current Editor-in-Chief, Professor Hans-Jörg Senn, said of the new Editors appointments "I am very pleased with the inclusion of Professor Verweij and Dr D'Incalci to the Editorial board of the EJC. I am sure that their scientific experience will add substantially to the excellence of the journal and I welcome them to our team".
