Generalities
Special Issues are devoted to papers falling into one of two categories: a) papers focussing on a specific theme, analysed from different angles by various groups of people working in the relative scientific area, especially if there is a new trend of research in that direction; b) extended papers selected among papers presented at international conferences symposia and workshops, having recognised good reputation and forming an important basis to exchange scientific research results.
In any case, contributions to Special Issues should have the same standards of originality and clarity as all other regular research papers that appear in Pattern Recognition Letters. In particular, category a) Special Issues should provide a perspective, explain, synthesise, look ahead, and review the subject under discussion, and category b) Special Issues should include revised, extended or updated papers, presenting new aspects with respect to those discussed in the proceedings papers.
It is the role of the Guest Editors, GEs, to establish the correct balance between the above features within the allocated number of pages, to set up the refereeing process and to communicate with authors and reviewers during the preparation of the Special Issue, SI. It is the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief, Special Issues, to ensure that the quality standards of Pattern Recognition Letters are maintained. Thus, the final responsibility for the acceptance of submitted papers remains with the Editor-in-Chief, Special Issues.
