Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory
and Labor-Managed Firms, Volume 9

Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory and Labor-Managed Firms is an edited annual volume of original international research on the issue of participatory and labor-managed organizations, published by Elsevier. Past volumes are representative of the best theoretical and empirical research being carried out on the economic analysis of participatory and labor-managed firms. Typical areas of research include employee ownership and profit-sharing, co-operatives, co-determination and employee participation in decision-making. The table of contents of
the previous volumes can be viewed at: http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/bookseriesdescription.cws_home/BS_PLMF/description

For the 9th Volume of ‘Advances’ the editors invite submissions from all fields of theoretical and empirical research into participatory and labor-managed firms, and particularly those that address the following themes.

1. Employee participation and firm performance. Recent research on “high performance workplace practices” has identified employee participation as a key element of sustained competitive advantage. We welcome both theoretical and empirical contributions addressing the links between employee participation and firm performance. We invite econometric analyses as well as case studies of general interest.

2. Employee participation and technological change. Technological innovations have led to more employee discretion in many workplaces and have reshaped the forms of employee participation. In high-tech industries in particular, these changes have often been combined with broad equity ownership or stock option schemes. We welcome papers offering theoretical or empirical insights on how technological change affects employee participation.

3. Employee participation and employee ownership in economic transitions and in developing economies. We invite papers that bring in new perspectives on Eastern European transition, and especially encourage papers on other, less studied regions. Articles with more historical focus are also welcome.

4. The viability of co-operatives and other forms of stakeholder firms in market economies. We welcome articles on labor-managed co-operatives as well as on other forms (e.g. agricultural co-operatives, consumer co-operatives, credit unions) and on interactions between different forms of co-operatives. We encourage articles focusing on historical record as well as analyses of the current challenges of globalisation and demutualization.

Although the primary focus of the research annual is economics, the editors also welcome analytical studies from related fields. To the 9th volume, contributions from industrial relations and economic history are especially welcome.
