Chapter 3

Data Issues in the New Economy
H.-J. Engelbrecht
(Massey University)

This chapter addresses the following measurement- and data-related
issues of the “new economy”: (1) Measurement of the magnitude and
impact of intangible capital stocks and of information and knowledge
flows; (2) the use of composite indices to try to capture complex
aspects of the knowledge-based and new economy in a single number;
and (3) the potential ability of information and communications technologies
to generate new data sources, thereby enabling new lines of
research.
