Chapter 44

E-Learning
M. Weller (The Open University)

E-learning has generated a great deal of interest regarding its potential to reach new students, reduce costs and transform the learning experience. This chapter looks at the varying uses of the term ‘e-learning’ and some of the initial promises and concerns surrounding it. There has been much focus on whether e-learning is comparable with traditional forms in terms of quality and whether new teaching methods are required to make effective use of the medium, and both of these issues are addressed. The chapter also looks at the approach of mixing media and teaching styles in blended learning, and the types of media that are used in e-learning. Lastly, the potential to create reusable learning objects is explored.
