National legislation
in European Union Member States to implement EU Directive (95/46/EC)is
in place in most European countries. Concerns about protecting individual
Privacy rights will have a growing impact on the growth of electronic
business. The combination has caused privacy and personal data protection
issues to climb up the business management agenda.
Under the Directive
businesses are required to demonstrate compliance. A consortium created
by International Commerce eXchange (ICX) was set up to bridge the gap
between legislative and ethical requirements to practical compliance
in operational business environments. The route taken was to create
a Code of Conduct for Privacy and Data Protection. The Code provides
the practical guidance for adopting best practices embedding regulatory
compliance into businesses. The structure of the Code allows businesses
to develop practical operational management processes specific to their
business needs with a transparent connection to fulfilling their ethical
and legal obligations.
