Publicly accessible
directories are essential for the flow of information and communication
in today's on-line organizations. Organizations that choose to perform
business on-line are tasked with making the difficult decision of how
much information to publish on the Internet. Much of the information
will come from internal directories and may be considered too sensitive
to expose to the Internet. The dilemma is how to share the required
information from the internal directories without making the data or
directories themselves potentially vulnerable. Exposing too much information
may result in the loss of proprietary data or may assist computer hackers
in mounting a cyber-attack. Whether it's a DoD PKI or information in
support of the business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce revolution, IT
personnel are forced with making the decision of how much information
to publish. Border directories support selective publishing of information
for the electronic audience. This presentation draws on experiences
gained from a Department of Defense pilot and extends that experience
to the digital B2B marketplace.
