Information
Assurance for the United Kingdom
John Doody, Head of Infosec Customer Services Group, UK
Management Stream - Wednesday 1 November 2000
The world of Information
Security has become more complex, diverse and of significant importance
as the benefits of information technology are introduced into both the
public and private sectors. There has never been a time when so many
people have been so reliant on effective security when carrying out
their daily business via IT systems. E- Commerce and Public Key Infrastructures
have replaced the traditional physical method of exchanging financial,
contractual and personal information. Communications architectures both
national and global have transformed the way in which businesses operate.
Conversely, this
explosion of technology and security requirements has introduced a number
of threats, which affect systems and for which appropriate countermeasures
must be developed. Confidentiality is no longer the key element of security,
Authentication, Integrity and more importantly Availability are the
facilities that need protecting. The world of Information Assurance
is here, services, protection, policy, procedures and people all have
a major place in this environment and these issues will be highlighted
during this session.
