Contributions to Cognition

[Brief Articles]  [File Formats]

Papers will be selected on the basis of their scientific quality. A paper's theoretical relevance to cognitive sciences, overall soundness of argument, and degree of empirical motivation, especially from converging sources, are more important than its adherence to specific methodological principles. The paper should present new and previously unpublished material, should be suited to the character of the Journal, and should describe work done and methods used in a clear and explicit manner (allowing reproduction of the methods by others). All contributions should be written in English.

Types of Articles
  • Full theoretical and experimental papers on the study of the mind.
No specific length is prescribed for contributions, but authors must confine themselves to the minimum required by the subject matter, the same applies to tables and footnotes.
  • Brief articles (see comments under the Brief Articles section.)
  • Discussions
  • Book Reviews
The journal publishes reviews of books that have been published recently or those that justify being brought to the attention of the readers again. (Books in English offered for review should be sent to Dr. Mehler.)
Submissions

Submission of an article is understood to imply that the article is original and unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Contributions of all articles should be submitted to Dr. Jacques Mehler, Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique, 54 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris, France.

Each FULL ARTICLE should include one original and three copies of the manuscript together with a full postal address, fax number and e-mail for the corresponding author.

Brief articles

[General]  [File Formats]

Brief Articles report an original empirical finding, a major theoretical advance or some crucial development that warrants rapid communication to the scientific community. Brief Articles should be no more than 3000 words long, excluding bibliography and figures. Brief Articles are subject to prioritized peer review. They will be reviewed by at least two reviewers within six weeks of submission. Originality and scientific importance being the major selection criteria, contributions that merely elaborate on earlier work will not be considered. No manuscript revisions are accepted, but papers may be resubmitted in revised form, in which case they will be treated as a new submission. Accepted Brief Articles will be available both on Cognition Online and in the first available issue of the journal Cognition.

Brief Articles should be submitted via e-mail to: cognition@lscp.ehess.fr. Figures for Brief Articles should be faxed to +33-1-4544 9835. Upon acceptance, authors will be supplied with instructions for the preparation of the final version of the manuscript.

File format and style requirements for articles to be published in Cognition and on Cognition-Online
[General]  [Brief Articles]

Format and style of manuscripts should conform to the conventions specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 1200 Seventeenth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA; 1983 Revision; www.apa.org/books/pubman.html.

Text
Please note that to expedite rapid publication after acceptance, the text of the manuscripts should be made available as an electronic file. This file should be supplied in one of the following formats: Microsoft® Word®, WordPerfect® or WordPro®.

Illustrations
Illustrations can be supplied in the traditional format or as an electronic file.

Traditional format - For the final version, illustrations (figures) must be supplied in professional-quality finished form, ready for reproduction. Pages 94-105 of the APA Publication Manual give detailed instructions on the proper preparation of drawings, including information on letter sizing and reduction factors.

Electronic files - The following are preferred formats:
native formats of Adobe® Photoshop®, Adobe® Illustrator®, CorelDRAW®, Corel® Photo-Paint®, Macromedia® FreeHand®. Graphic files may also be supplied in either TIFF, JPEG or EPS format. However, when using the EPS format a preview image must be included and the file should not contain "placed art"; instead bitmap and vector graphics should be supplied separately together with instructions on the composition of the image. All graphic files must be submitted in sufficiently high resolution (240-300 dpi for grayscale or colour images, and 600-1000 dpi for line art) to allow for printing. All type fonts used in studio-created artwork must be either "embedded" in the file or supplied separately.
Although it is in principle possible to use other graphic file formats than those specified above, doing so may pose conversion problems and thus cause serious delays in publication. (Authors are advised to contact the publisher for further information.)

Electronic Annexes

Authors may submit electronic annexes ranging from simply additional tables and/or figures to source code, animations, 3D/confocal images, videos etc. These will be linked to the article and displayed on Cognition Online. The main criterion for including electronic annexes is that they must be of interest to the readers and of high scientific and technical quality. The article should be self-contained, as we want to continue serving those readers who may not have access to Internet facilities. However, the background data should provide the interested (specialist) reader with more insight into the research on which the article is based.

We encourage submission of a large variety of background data, ranging from source code, plots, graphs, animation, 3D models, videos, to simply tables or figures. Data should be stored in the most common format possible (for downloading and viewing in different software packages) or alternatively a format that is widely accepted within the applicable scientific field. Authors submitting the following items with their Article should do so in one of the formats indicated, and state clearly which of these applies: videos and movies in QuickTime® or MPEG formats (Macintosh® QuickTime movie® files should be "flattened" to allow them to be viewed by PC users); sounds in AU or AIFF formats.

For security reasons (viruses), we cannot accept binary executable files. Each data set must be submitted in one file; do not combine different data sets into one file, and do not split a single data set into multiple files. For practical reasons, there are limits to the size of the electronic annexes.

All electronic annexes are reviewed, therefore the submitted Article should be accompanied by an electronic version and a hard copy (where possible) of the electronic annex and a completed Electronic Annex Description Form.

After acceptance, the background data sets will reside on the Elsevier server where they will be made available to the readers, together with the article. Please note that parts of the Electronic Annex Description Form will be reproduced exactly with the published article (viz. on-line and print versions) in order to provide the reader with the required background information. All components of the electronic annex must be clearly labelled so that the reviewer/reader can understand immediately what the data represent.

Reprints

Of each article 50 reprints will be supplied free of charge to the authors. Extra reprints can be ordered using the form accompanying the proofs sent to the author.

Proofs

All questions arising after acceptance of the manuscript, especially those relating to proofs, should be directed to Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd., Elsevier House, Brookvale Plaza, East Park, Shannon, Co. Clare, Ireland, Tel: +353 61 709 600, Fax: +353 61 709 100.
