George Adelman, after WW II service in the U.S. Navy, did his undergraduate work at Dartmouth College and graduate work at Boston University (Psychology) and Simmons (Library Science). He was a Reference Librarian at the Boston Public Library until 1954 when he became Technical Information Officer for the U.S. Navy, Office of Naval Research (Boston).
In 1964 he became Editor and Librarian for MIT's Neurosciences Research Program (NRP), which, under the leadership of Francis O. Schmitt (and later, Gardner Quarton and Fred Worden) helped establish the field of Neuroscience. He helped develop (with Ted Melnechuk) the "NRP Bulletin" and became its Editor. This was a quarterly series of monographs (1964-1982), each issue of which derived from an interdisciplinary "work session" of world leaders in a particular brain subject who were convened specifically to help clarify and define this new "cutting edge" area. After a 3-year period as a free-lance editorial "consultant", he joined Birkhäuser Boston Publishing Company (later acquired by Springer-Verlag) as Editorial Director and Managing Editor where he was involved in various fields - mathematics, computer sciences, science history, architecture and design, life science, and neuroscience. Here, he began to organize and develop the first edition of the "Encyclopedia of Neuroscience", with the support and encouragement of Birkhäuser Publisher, Klaus Peters; Editor, Will Klump; and Consultant, Lore Henlein.
In 1992 he returned to MIT, first as Visiting Scientist (under David Cohen) at the National Magnet Laboratory, and, more recently, as Research Affiliate (under Mriganka Sur) in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department.
