Current Readings in Transport Economics Vol.3, No.4, 2005

I have just returned from the annual European Transport Conference in Strasbourg (an event I enthusiastically recommend). Among the numerous economics topics covered was the social impacts of transport.

A key question in this regard is addressed by Chris Nash and Bryan Matthews in their newly published book, "Measuring the Marginal Social Cost of Transport". This is Volume 14 in the Research in Transportation Economics series (RTE), edited by Martin Dresner.

In recent years the RTE series has reflected the growth in research in this field by publishing several volumes a year. Citations to the series appear to be increasing, it is receiving good reviews (see below), and it must now be considered a major resource for researchers interested in this area.

I encourage you all to read RTE – and, of course, to send Martin your own ideas for RTE volumes!

Reviews of the Month – praise for the RTE series

Peoples & Talley, RTE Vol.10: Transportation Labor Issues and Regulatory Reform

“a pleasant surprise ...covers the topic well and in a logical order ... refreshingly concise introduction ... the book is worthwhile ... analyzes a range of issues that have continuing importance ... a rich case study ... of value to researchers and practitioners in transportation, human resources management, safety, and industrial organization.   [Rich’s article is] an excellent treatment of an extremely worthwhile, but complex, topic.  I recommend it to you and will insist on it for my students.”
Richard Beilock, University of Florida, in Journal of Transportation and Statistics, Vol.7/2-3, 2004

McMullen, RTE Vol.6: Transportation After Deregulation

“some interesting policy issues resulted [from deregulation], and these papers provide further empirical assessment. It would be valuable to read all of the papers because they provide current research on the effects of deregulation in the industry.”
Brian Sloboda, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, US Dept of Transportation,  in Journal of Transportation and Statistics, Vol.7/2-3, 2004
