The 6th International Livestock Farming Systems Symposium will be held at Benevento, Italy from 26-28 August 2003, organized jointly by EAAP, CIHEAM, ConSDABI and FAO. The overall title will be "Livestock farming systems: Product quality based on local resources and its potential contribution to improved sustainability".
The purpose of this series of symposia is to establish and maintain a systematic approach to research and development for livestock farming systems. Topics to be included are:
The Symposium is in the series organized by the Livestock Farming Systems Working Group of EAAP. The general aim of the series is to establish and maintain a systematic approach to research and development for livestock farming systems. At this Symposium special emphasis will be given to Southern European conditions. There will be plenary sessions (invited contributions with discussion) parallel and poster sessions for contributed papers with ample time for viewing the posters and discussion. A field trip will be arranged to enable participants to become more familiar with the features of animal production and livestock farming in this region of Italy.
The history of the area is incredibly interesting and ancient - too detailed and lengthy to summarize here. It involves ancient tribes, rivalries, the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the influence of the Church and the secular power of the Popes. 1860 is celebrated by the Beneventans when they seized the city by revolution which was later joined by the army of Garibaldi resulting in the freedom of the city. Benevento became a new province divided into four valleys each of which has fascinating and characteristic features. It is an area of Europe with unique attractions for the visitor.

The next EAAP Mediterranean Symposium will be held in Greece from June 5-8 2003 on the general topic of "Animal production in the mountains". Information: eaap@eaap.org
Within the framework of the Mountains International Year, the Association Montanea is organizing an international conference on: "Land, Breeding and Life in the Mountains of the World" from 26-27 November 2002 in Chambéry, France. Organized around one day of conferences and one day of farm visits, this meeting will compare world experiences, and the results sustainable breeding in mountainous zones.
Topics include: species, techniques of production, foodstuffs or manufactured textiles, nature of the inhabitants and evaluations by people involved in large regional projects.
Under the scientific direction of Michel Thibier, Scientific Attaché at the Permanent Representation of France to FAO, the speakers of various countries will make presentations on the breeding of yaks in the mountains of Tibet (Dr. Tashi, Tibet-China), Breeding of Goats in Nepal (Dr. Tulachan, Katmandu, Nepal), the role of asses in mountain life (Dr. Alemayehu, Ethiopia), the wandering production of camelidae in South America (Dr. Camino, Nepal), breeding of bovines in Tarentaise (Mr. Lancon, Chambéry, France), and on the advantages and general limits of cattle production systems in mountains (Dr. Maki-hokkonen, FAO, Rome, Italy).
This event is organised within the framework of a series of demonstrations devoted to experiences and exchanges between international participants in mountain zones. This will to show the irreplaceable place of breeding, with its species varieties for a durable development of agricultural activity in mountain zones.

The Society of German Engineers (VDI-MEG), the Committee for Technology and Structures in Agriculture (KTBL) and the Georg-August-University of Goettingen invite you to the 6th International Conference on "Construction, Technology and Environment in Livestock Farming" taking place in Vechta, Germany, March 25th - 27th, 2003.
In the course of ongoing research in various agricultural disciplines with respect to animal production and housing, a holistic approach which merges the specialized knowledge is gaining in importance in particular with respect to animal welfare and environment. At the Conference the latest scientific results on technical and environmental developments in livestock farming and biosystems will be presented. In the plenary sessions, attempts will be made to identify international experts in animal welfare, animal production systems and process technology. They will introduce the subjects. In three parallel sessions, containing about ten oral presentations each, a poster session and video sessions the latest results will be presented and discussed. Finally the conference will provide an outlook on future ways and developments in sustainable animal production.

The Gordon Conference on Quantitative Genetics and Genomics will be held in Ventura, California (just up the coast from LA) on 9-14 February 2003. For those that have not attended in the past, the conference is a wonderful mix of quantitative geneticists ranging from plant and animal breeders to human geneticists to evolutionary biologists. Throw in the informal setting of the Gordon conference - a whale watching trip one afternoon, wine tasting the next - and you have a great way to interact with a very wide range of researchers working on issues of the analysis of complex genetic traits. Hope to see you there. Be sure and registrar early, as the conference reached capacity last year.
