Dr Georges Van Snick, Belgium

Dr. Georges Van Snick of Belgium died serenely, surrounded by his family, on 7 January 2002 at the age of 79. He was born the 4 September 1922 in Néchin (Hainaut-Belgium).

Dr. Van Snick was a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and he started his professional career in 1947. In 1950, he was appointed as Adviser in Animal Production in the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1954, he became a member of the staff of the Minister of Agriculture, René Lefebvre. In 1958 he was appointed Director of the Division of Animal Breeding, followed by appointment as General Inspector then as Director-General of the Department of Animal Breeding and Veterinary Inspection. He held this position until his retirement in 1987.  Dr. Van Snick also taught at the Free University of Brussels and at the Agricultural Institute of the Province of Hainaut. 

Dr Georges Van Snick was a great figure of Belgian Agriculture: as Director-General; as organiser of the Agricultural Show of Brussels; and of the International Show of Tournai; as Editor of the Journal " Les Elevages Belges"; as Chairman of the International Association " des écrivains paysans".  He was an active member of the EAAP, as the Representative of the Belgian Ministry of Agriculture; as a member of the EAAP Council; as Chairman of the Commission on Horse Production; as organiser of the 28th Annual Meeting of the EAAP in Brussels in 1977.

Dr Georges Van Snick will be remembered as a man of great courteousness, of vast culture and being thoughtful towards his family. He left his mark on half a century of Animal Agriculture in Belgium.
