New Secretary General of EAAP

Professor Jean Boyazoglu's decision to leave the EAAP Secretariat at the end of 2002 was accepted by EAAP Council with great regret at its 98th Rome meeting on the 6 April 2002.  Council decided to declare the position of Secretary General vacant and a Selection Committee was nominated consisting of A. Aumaitre, M. Bichard, J. Boyazoglu, J. Crettenand, J. Mäki-Hokkonen, Ph. Solms-Lich, A. van der Zijpp and  M. Zjalic serving as secretary. In pursuance of Council's decision the President of EAAP convened a meeting of the Selection Committee on 26 May, 2002 in Interlaken, Switzerland.

After due consideration of the various possibilities, the Selection Committee decided unanimously to nominate Dr. Andrea Rosati new Secretary General of EAAP. This nomination was circulated to Council on the 18 June 2002 for information and eventual approval. The President informed the General Assembly of EAAP on 3 September 2002 of this nomination. Dr. Andrea Rosati's entry in duty is the 1 January 2003 with a four months part-time period starting on 1 September, 2002.

Dr. Rosati, a graduate of the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Perugia, gained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, USA under Prof. D. Van Vleck. He then joined the Italian Animal Breeders Association (AIA) and worked there for eight years, where he dealt with selection schemes and milk and beef recording systems for livestock. Since January 2002, he has been Managing Director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory in Cremona, Italy. Since his return to Europe in 1996, Dr. Rosati has been in constant contact with EAAP and has made a major input to the activities of ICAR (International Committee for Animal Recording) of which he has been, since 1998, a member of the Board and since 2000 Vice-President responsible for technical and scientific matters.

The post of Secretary General of EAAP carries also that of Secretary General of ICAR and services the secretariats of WAAP (World Association for Animal Production) and RBI (Rare Breeds International). Council believes that this appointment is very much in the interest of EAAP and its membership, and also in that of the livestock sector world-wide.
