World Conference WCAP 2003
26-31 October 2003 in Brazil

The 9th World Conference on Animal Production (WCAP-2003) will be held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, 26-31 October 2003, with an expected 2000-2500 animal and agricultural scientists participating from throughout the world.  You should be making plans NOW to submit abstracts for papers or posters, and for the opportunity to visit one of the truly exceptional livestock production areas of the Western Hemisphere, and in one of the most beautiful cities in South America.

WCAP-2003 sponsored jointly by the World Association of Animal Production (WAAP), of which EAAP, ASAS, CSAS  and ADSA are members, along with ALPA (Asociacion Latinoamericana de Produccion Animal)and SBZ (Sociedade Brasiliera de Zootecnia). The Organizing Committee is comprised of the WAAP Executive Board and members of UFRGS (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul). The leadership of the Organizing Committee is provided by Drs. Jorge Lopez and Sergio Nicolaiewsky, UFRGS. The theme of WCAP-2003 is "Animal Production for the Well-Being of the Human Population".

The Program is built around a series of Plenary Sessions and Special Symposia, focusing on high priority issues facing animal production on a global scale, and groupings of presented papers and posters under 20 specific topics. An additional feature of this Conference is the fact that Technical Tours will be provided every afternoon, with specific focus on one segment of the livestock industries (and during which time there will be NO papers or posters in that industry area). This unique combination of presentations and tours is expected to add significantly to the value of the Conference. It is the intent of the Organizing Committee to develop a Conference which focuses on animal production in a less reductionist approach and a more integrated systems approach than we have tended to follow in recent years.

An additional feature of the Conference will be an exhibition of industry equipment, supplies and services, located in a new and ultra-modern exhibit complex, adjacent to the Convention Centre.

I urge that you visit the WCAP-2003 website shown below to find information on submission of papers and posters, the general program, registration, specific topics and travel information. I also urge you to consider attending even if you are NOT going to present a paper or poster. The recent ASAS/CSAS/ADSA meeting in Quebec brought to light the need for international cooperation and interaction.

Porto Alegre has opened a new, modern international airport within the last year. Accommodations are excellent, as are the Conference facilities.

I look forward to greeting a very large contingent of scientists from EAAP and other parts of the world in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in October, 2003
