The Hellenic Society of Animal Production (HSAP) held its Annual Scientific Meeting in Karditsa City (middle of Greece) from 8-10 October 2003. The Prefecture of Karditsa has long history and tradition on sheep farming (well known from the Karagouniko breed of sheep) and cotton production. The meeting was attended by 200 participants, members of the HSAP, plus 60 final year and post postgraduate animal science students.
During the afternoon of the first day three main papers were presented, followed by a constitutional meeting of the society. The same night a dinner in a nice restaurant was offered by the local authorities to all participants. The following morning 19 papers were presented, dealing with Genetics, Animal Physiology and Reproduction of different animal species. After the meeting the participants joined in a cultural and social visit to a wonderful and well known lake of the area named Plastira Lake, about 30 km far from Karditsa city. On the third day 20 papers on Animal Nutrition, Aquaculture and Animal welfare and Behavior were presented.
It was an interesting meeting from scientific point of view and everybody enjoyed it very much. The participants also enjoyed the conference dinner in a very friendly atmosphere with excellent local food, music and dancing. The students, in particular, were impressed by the presentations of the postgraduate students and the friendly environment of the Conference, and are looking forward to joining the Society as soon as they will get their degree. It is worth to mention here that the 45 under graduate students of the Animal Science Dept of the Agricultural University of Athens with 3 academic staff members, had a three days training programme during which they visited a number of farms in the area (laying hens, dairy sheep & cows, horses and an organic farm with pigs, bison & ostriches).
The HSAP, which has 500 animal scientists as members, holds a Meeting once per year in different city. In most of the years, the University Animal Science courses try to combine a training programme by visiting livestock farms, in the area of the Meeting in order to give to students the opportunity to attend the HSAP Meeting.
