Important Deadline Dates for EAAP Meeting in Bled, Slovenia
Updates of the EAAP Meeting Programme for Bled, Slovenia may be found on www.bfro.uni-lj.si/EAAP2004 |
The 55th EAAP Annual Meeting will be held from 5 to 9 September 2004 in Bled, Slovenia. The meeting is being organized by the Slovenian Animal Producers and Institutions and will include the usual EAAP Scientific Study Commission Programme, nine Workshops and Courses and several Conference Tours and Excursions. In addition an interesting Accompanying Persons' Programme is arranged showing the livestock production, landscape and culture of Slovenia.
The Republic of Slovenia lies at the heart of Europe where the Alps and the mysterious Karst meet the Pannonian plains on one side and the Mediterranean on the other side. Slovenia has a great variety of climatic, soil and landscape conditions, which dictate various livestock production types, animal species and breeds adapted to various environmental conditions. Typical Slovene livestock products will be exhibited together with a show of folk customs and culture.
Slovenia is one of the smallest states in Europe and became independence in 1991. Today it is one of the most successful transitional countries in Central Europe in which agriculture and animal production have primary roles. The country's agro-environmental programme supports sustainable development of animal production methods that use the natural resources, preserve the biodiversity of animal breeds and protect the natural landscape. The network of Research and Extension Institutions covers the country and the Slovenian Breeders' Association promotes animal production systems. The main goal of Slovenian animal husbandry is the stable production of quality safe food and suitable income for producers.
Bled has 5,600 residents and lies at the foot of the Julian Alps, 501 metres above sea level in the extreme north-western part of Slovenia. Bled is one of the most beautiful tourist gems on the sunny side of the Alps and its mild, healthy sub-alpine climate gives it the longest bathing season in the Alps. Tourism began in Bled in the year 855 when the Swiss physician Arnold Rikli started treating his patients here. In 1903 Bled won the gold medal at the great international fair of health resorts in Vienna. The jewels in Bled's crown are the island in the middle of the lake and Bled castle which towers over a dramatic cliff rising straight out of the calm lake. The history of Bled starts in the bronze age and today offers visitors an exquisite baroque chapel. Bled offers recreation: sports on the lake, tennis, walking in the unspoilt wilderness of Triglav National Park, equestrian pursuits, and golf. Winter offers winter sports and covered thermal pools. In 2004 Bled will celebrate the millennial anniversary since the first written document on Bled appeared when the German Emperor Henrik II gave the Bled estate to Bishop Albuin.
The programme offers EAAP standards of science combined with unique Slovenian hospitality, the "Slovenian" way of life and the unique Slovenian products.
Further information on Sessions and Topics may be gained from the Study Commission Programme (page 251) or by contacting the Presidents of Study Commissions. The EAAP Meeting will be held in the Festival Hall which is located on a beautiful, quiet site next to the hotels on the lake-shore with a panoramic view. There are more than 20 meeting rooms and halls to suit all requirements at the Festival Hall and in the nearby hotels.
In addition to the Study Commission Sessions the programme will include a Welcome Cocktail, Opening Ceremony, Conference Party, Slovenian Social Evening, Post-Conference Dinner, Conference Tour, Accompanying Persons' Programme and Post-Conference Tours.
